The Church of San Giorgio al Velabro is located in the area of Velabro, linked to the legendary history of Romulus and Remus, and this gives it a particular meaning in the Roman tradition. The presence of the arches of Giano and Argentari underline the great importance of this place.
The uncertainty about the origin of the church and the changes made in the thirteenth century with the opening of the rose window, the construction of the porch, and the Romanesque bell tower, testify
the evolution of the building through the centuries.
The three-aisled arrangement with bare columns in marble and granite, the 12th-century ciborium above the altar, and the “Fenestella confessionis” (which allowed the relics of the martyrs to be seen) add elements of interest to the interior architecture. The presence of an alleged fresco by Giotto or Pietro Cavallini in the apse basin (Christ in the center and the figures of Mary, Saint George, Saint Peter, and Saint Sebastian) reflects the rich symbolism present here.
The radical interventions carried out in the 1920s certainly shaped the present appearance of the church. The decision to return to Romanesque forms,
erasing the testimonies of later eras is an interesting choice and reflects the vision of the architect Antonio Muñoz.
The terrorist attack in July 1993 caused significant damage to the church, but the subsequent restoration allowed the recovery and reopening in 1996.
This event emphasizes the resilience and importance of preserving the historical and cultural heritage.
The Church of San Giorgio al Velabro is a place steeped in history, art, and spirituality and its path through the centuries makes it one of the greatest cultural treasures of Rome.
