The Necropolis of Porto is a small, fascinating site rich in history. Its development over the centuries offers us valuable information on the life and society of Portus, the commercial port of ancient Rome. The tombs that make up this necropolis reflect the social variety and activities carried out by the residents of that time, from wealthy families to the more modest classes.
Inscriptions found on tomb facades provide valuable details about the lives of the deceased and their activities during life. It is interesting to note how these representations of everyday life were incorporated into funerary art, thus allowing us to gain an authentic insight into the society and occupations of those who inhabited Portus.
The presence of a poorer social level within the necropolis reminds us that, even in a context so rich in history and culture, there were evident social disparities. The simplest and most humble tombs of this social stratum tell us about the challenges and realities experienced by those who did not enjoy the same fortunes as the wealthier classes.
The excavation of the necropolis in the 1920s and 1930s made it possible to recover and preserve important archaeological finds, allowing scholars to deepen their knowledge of this extraordinary site and of Roman society in the imperial period.
The Porto Necropolis therefore remains not only an important archaeological site but also a tangible testimony to the lives and traditions of those who inhabited this area centuries ago.
